Hoopla Club, a monthly children's magazine, in association with the Indian Institute of HAM, organized the 'Quiz on Air', a unique on-air quiz on Friday, the 3rd of September, 2010, between 9.30 a.m. and 12.30 p.m in Bangalore.
The quiz that was conducted live on the HAM radio network for ten schools in Bangalore saw an enthusiastic response from the children as they answered questions related to general science and traffic.
A short talk on road safety and traffic rules preceded the quiz and Mr Praveen Sood, Additional Commissioner of Traffic Police, answered questions on traffic rules posed on air by some of the children.
The team from DPS Bangalore South, consisting of Pooja Arya, Shruthi Satish and Niel Kulkarni won the first place in the quiz, followed by the team from Kendriya Vidyalaya --- Hebbal in the second place and Little Flower Public School in the third place.
The quiz questions were transmitted from the main HAM control room, which were received by the participating schools and the answers were transmitted back through the HAM radio station established in each school. The Ham Radio Officials established the required HAM radio station at each of the participating schools and co-ordinated the Quiz.
There were three participants from each school -- one each from class VIII,
IX and X respectively and across different boards -- State / CBSE / ICSE.
The idea was to introduce to the school children, the wonderful hobby of
'Amateur Radio' or 'HAM Radio', which is a scientific application of a hobby.
The quiz also demonstrated how HAM Radio could be used to conduct similar
events among school children and inculcate a scientific temper for educational
purposes.
