What is Phonics?
Phonics is the study of the language of Sounds. Phonics is knowing that sounds
and letters have a relationship it's that simple, and that complex.
It is the link between what we say and what we can read and write. Children
need very explicit instructions on how the letters on a page correspond to
the spoken word. Phonics provides aid to the child in understanding relating
the Spoken Sounds to the Written Letters and vice versa. This helps in forming
of Words and then even Sentences.
The method involves the use of Consonant and Vowel Sounds. It is found to
be extremely essential and have imminent impact in the Speech Development
of the child.
Why Phonics & its importance in Early-Education?
In India we are still waking up to the acceptance that Phonics should be given
utmost importance in the study of a growing child. Phonics instructions not
only help children to decode words but also help in spelling them right. It
advocates the ability to sound out words by combining letters and blending
them into sounds. Thus, the children learn to recognize unfamiliar words by
associating speech sounds with letters or group of letters. These strategies
along with the listed sight words will help in developing fluency in reading.
Not surprisingly being a fairly new introduction to the Learning Scenario
in the country most parents feel the lack of good study material to help the
child learn Phonics and given that it is a fresh methodology of learning Sound-Letter
Association, a lot of parents could do with a teaching aid that meets the
objective easily and effectively.
As Developmental Paediatrician and Director Centre for Child Development and
Disabilities, Dr Mundkur has had the benefit of a number of years of study
in this very subject. And the advantage of meeting and interacting with parents
everyday has accelerated her determination and belief that an appropriate
effective Study-tool be designed for the Indian teachers and parents to help
them with the study of Phonics.
The workbook contains Consonants and Vowel Sounds and has been designed to
be complemented with ample activities and exercises. The second volume goes
a step further with the introduction to the study of complete words and the
reading of simple sentences. All this theory coupled with an Audio only reiterates
the Learning Process and increasing the familiarity of the Sounds to the child.
The letters and sounds are not taught in the alphabetical manner but by introducing
the easier prolonged consonants before the difficult ones. We at Hoopla Club
believe that this combination of a Comprehensive Self-Help Workbook and a
DVD is a very interesting and effective concept of Learning.
